The point is not to write something that perfectly encompasses all the elements of your relationship, but rather to help you and your partner communicate about, take charge of and keep focused on what matters most in your relationship.

Here are a few things to consider when you’re writing your mission statement:

1. Values – Family, career, education

2. Goals – Children, financial freedom

3. Definitions – Faith, commitment, loyalty
Here’s an example of a relationship mission statement that I created for myself:
“I want to create a loving, nurturing, and supportive environment for myself and my partner. In this relationship, I was us to maintain and foster personal growth and happiness. I aim to be apart of a partnership where we consider each others emotional and physical health, and work to better each other in both areas…”
Once a purpose statement is written down, it can serve as a future reference point. When you are feeling divided and struggling you can pull this purpose statement out and assess if your actions are in accord with your relationship vision and your relationship purpose. Actions synonymous with core relationship values is the recipe to relationship success.
